The First
UNIVERSALIST  CHURCH
(Unitarian Universalist Association)

of New Madison

Our Covenant

Love is the doctrine of this church,
The quest of truth its sacrament,
And service is its prayer.
To dwell together in peace,
To seek knowledge in freedom,
To serve human needs,
To the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the divine.

Revised from the Covenant written by Griswold Williams (Universalist minister)

Our Mission

A spiritual community that never limits itself to one religion or one teacher, and seeks the truth even when it’s hard to hear.

A religion where your ideas matter…your faith (or lack thereof) can be fully expressed…your thoughts will be admired and welcomed by others.

A faith that isn’t threatened by your choosing differently, that doesn’t feel jeopardized by diversity, that isn’t endangered by your uniqueness – but welcomes these instead.

A holy place where your children can learn about all the world’s religions, seeing what is valuable in each, the good and the bad in all, and can choose for themselves what to believe.

A sacred place where no one’s opinion is ever heresy (no matter what), and what you believe at any given time (even as you grow and change) is honored as right for you.

A village for all our children to learn basic human virtues like respect for all life, ethics, civility, tolerance for differences, solving conflicts without violence, and unconditional love…enough for everyone.

A larger Association to be part of, that works for the social good, that advocates for the poor, the voiceless, the marginalized – where you can meet people like you, decide the direction of the organization, and help make the world a better place.

A church where you make the decision, you govern, you choose, all records are open to everyone, and opinions from the pews count as much as the ones from the pulpit.

An extended family where the young learn from the elders, the elders learn from the young, and people care about each other.

A religion at peace with science, not at odds with it.

A place where dogma is irrelevant; where doubt, examination, questioning, criticism, and change are embraced…not feared.

A religious community that honors your whole person: the rich gifts of your Spirit, the capacity for love in your Heart, the strengths of your Body, and the incredibly logical, reasonable human Mind.
